A Message from the President

Greeting Fellow Lions,

Happy New Year! No, my calendar is not 6 months slow - July 1st is the start of a new Lions' program year. Traditionally, we start the new year by making resolutions – setting goals for the coming year. In keeping with that tradition, here are some of our goals for the 2008-2009 Lions' program year.

  • Continue our tradition of community service through projects such as Christmas Food Basket; Toys for Tots; scholarships for LaVille High School graduates; financial support for Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, FFA, 4-H, and other local youth programs; eyeglass and hearing aid recycling programs; vision screening at the LUMC day-care; and contributions to state projects and LCIF.
  • Find new ways to serve our community.
  • Implement a membership recruitment program, and a membership orientation program, and achieve in a net increase of at least 6 new members during this program year.
  • Increase attendance at board meetings and dinner meetings, and participation in club projects.
  • Increase our club's participation in district and state Lions events.
We can do all these things, and more! I look forward to working with each of you as “We Serve” our community in this new Lions' year.

Yours in Lionism,
Lion Paul Russell

July Dinner Meeting
As in years past, there will be no dinner meeting in July. Instead, we will meet at our food booth at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds for a cleanup night. See the next item for details.

4-H Fair Food Booth
We will have two cleanup sessions at the Lakeville Lions food booth at the St. Joseph County 4.H Fairgrounds. The first cleanup session will be Tuesday, July 8th, at 6:00 p.m.. The second cleanup session will be Tuesday, July 22nd, at 6:00 p.m. There will be a short board meeting before the work session on the 8th; there will be no dinner meeting in July.

The food booth will be open from Saturday, July 26th through Saturday, August 2nd. Lion Rob Hochschild will be the business manager again this year, and Lion David Grenert will be the operations manager. Lion Dave will be contacting you to ask you to work at the fair. This is our singlest largest fund-raising project, and we need the help of all our members and friends to make it a success.

Lions Pride Ride
Our first-ever Lions Pride Ride was held on Saturday, June 28. We met or exceeded all of our goals for this event and received many positive comments and useful suggestions from the participants. Event co-chairs Lion Jim Foster and Lion Rose Russell have already started making plans for an even bigger and better Lions Pride Ride in 2009.

4th of July Parade & Pancake Breakfast
Lion Don Milzarek reports that nearly 70 units participated in Lakeville's annual 4th of July Parade.

Lion Rose Russell reports that the approximately 300 people attended the Pancake Breakfast. This is an increase of 40% over last year.

We want to extend our appreciation to all Lions, family members, and friends who helped make these events successful.

Thought for the Month

Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal. – Elbert Hubbard
