August 2008
A Message from the President
Greeting Fellow Lions,
It seems like summer has barely started, and it's almost over. Perhaps it's because the Lakeville Lions have been busy this summer. We started with the Port-A-Pit Chicken and Pork Chop Sale at the Lakeville Town-Wide Garage Sale, then followed up with the Golf Outing, the Strawberry Festival, the first ever Lions Pride Ride, the 4th of July Parade and Pancake Breakfast, and our biggest fund-raiser of the year – the food booth at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair. In the past 13 weeks, we have raised approximately $17,000 to support Lions service projects in our community, in our state, and around the world. We extend our sincere appreciation to all Lions, family members, and friends who helped make these projects successful.
As in years past, there will be no dinner meeting in August. Lion Rose and I hope you will join us for food, fun, and fellowship at a picnic at our home on Saturday, September 6.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Paul Russell

Lions Picnic
Our traditional after-the-fair, end-of-summer picnic will be held Saturday, September 6, at the home of Lions Paul and Rose Russell, 507 East Jackson Street, Lakeville. Lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, and beverages will be provided. Please bring a salad, hot dish, or dessert to share. When we have had our fill of good food, we will clear the tables and play some games. Bring a deck of cards or your favorite board game. If we're not careful, a euchre tournament might break out.
If you intend to attend the picnic, please call Lion Jean Barlow (291-0680) by Wednesday, September 3. We wouldn't want to run out of hamburgers and hot dogs.
4-H Fair Food Booth
The 2008 St. Joseph County 4-H Fair is history. We extend our sincere appreciation to all Lions, family members, and friends who helped make this project a success again this year. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Lion Rob Hochschild, who served as the business manager, and Lion Dave Grenert, who served as the operations manager.
At the August board meeting, Lion Rob reported that he had not yet received all of the bills for this project, but that it appears that we had another record-breaking year.
Lion Dave reported that many Lions, family members, and friends worked long hours to make this project a success, but that nearly half of our members did not participate in any manner. Some members were unable to participate due to health problems or schedule conflicts, but several members simply failed to show up at their scheduled time. This project provides over half of the money we use for community service projects, but without the support of all our members, it is becoming increasingly difficult to run this project. A committee has been appointed to develop proposals to address this problem before we are forced to abandon this project.
