November 2008
A Message from the President
Greeting Fellow Lions,
When a young man in our Boy Scout troop recites the Boy Scout Oath, he promises, on his honor, "to do my best to do my duty to God and my country". What is our duty to our country? It is probably best expressed in the Oath of Office of the President of The United States: "to protect and defend the Constitution of The United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic". While the performance of this duty can take many forms, for many of us it takes the form of military service.
On Veterans Day, we pause to recognize those who have done their duty to their country through military service, to pay our respects to those who have died in the service of their country, who have given, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "the last full measure", and to reaffirm our hope that our current war will also be our last war.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Paul Russell

Christmas Projects
Food Basket: LaVille Elementary School is conducting a canned food drive which will end on November 21. The food collected in this drive will be collected and boxed by Lions for distribution to needy families in our community. Food basket assembly is scheduled for Friday, December 19, and distribution is scheduled for Saturday, December 20.
Toys for Tots: Collection boxes have been placed at several locations in and around Lakeville, and “Blitz Day” will be Saturday, December 6 at Dave Grenert's Garage.
Pictures With Santa: Santa will arrive at the Lakeville Library at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, and will be available for pictures until 2:00 p.m. We provide free pictures with Santa to all members of the Lakeville community.
Christmas Cards for U.S. Troops: Please bring unsigned Christmas cards – individual cards or boxes of cards - to the November dinner meeting. The cards must be non-religious as they will be sent to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are sending these cards so that the troops will have cards to send home to their families and loved ones. If you would like to send a signed card to a member of our military or a veteran, we will mail your card for you. For additional information, please call Lion Arden Balmer at 784-8089.
Winter 50-50 Contest: The Snow Is Right
Are you a weather prognosticator? Bring an extra dollar to the November dinner meeting and buy a chance to predict the total snowfall for the month of December. The person who comes closest to the official total, as reported by the National Weather Service, without going over the total, will win half the pot. The winner must be present at the January dinner meeting to collect the prize. If you cannot come to the November dinner meeting, you can buy a chance from Lion Dave Grenert until November 30.
On December 1, we will start a new contest to predict the total snowfall for January. You may buy a chance to predict the January snowfall from Lion Dave Grenert any time during the month of December. The winner will be paid at the February dinner meeting.
